Resize Media Center Window

Get around the proportion lock

Here's a sneaky way to adjust the Media Center window size that circumvents the normal proportion lock. I use this to get a widescreen window on my square monitor.

To get Media Center in a window, you click the Restore button in the upper right next to the Close button. The resulting window has the same proportions (width to height) as your monitor, and that ratio remains fixed when you resize the window.

One way to adjust the height individually is to size the window fairly large on your monitor, then start the Magnifier. Start->All Programs->Accessories->Ease of Use->Magnifier. This places a docked magnifying window at the top of your screen, and forces any windows that would be covered to adjust their height. The Media Center window will be given a wider ratio, which it will retain through reboots. To adjust the ratio, while the magnifier is running, hover over the bottom edge of the magnification dock, and drag to resize. As you resize the magnifier, other windows on the desktop remain in view.

Once you have achieved a ratio that looks good to you, you can exit Magnifier through its control panel File->Exit, and windows that were adjusted will remain so.

Finally, in the Media Center window with video or tv playing, click through your Zoom options. 3 is a good one for a wide window.
